Moe wolves.

The Lamar Canyon pack is getting very reliable viewing. They are about ½ mile from the road across an open sagebrush flat. Every morning and every evening you can see them moving about doing their wolf things.

Between morning and evening, I saw 12 today.

I finally got a decent wolf photo. Down in the Hayden Valley I waited for 2 hours when, finally, the alpha male of the Wapiti Lake pack came in from the west and crossed the road on his way to the rendezvous site:

Mice!

I got a mouse in the trailer last night and managed to kill it with my shoe. So, after watching the wolves in the Lamar Valley this morning, I drove out looking for mouse traps. I finally found the brand I was looking for in Bozeman.

I'm still working on getting better wolf photos. So far, this is about the best I've gotten at ½ mile:

I did get pics of an elk, bighorn rams and a mule deer fawn:

Moving day. I spent the day moving camp between Mammoth and Tower.

I went out to the Hayden Valley in the evening and spent 2 hours waiting for wolves that never showed.

Lots of driving today. Between internet, a dead battery on the computer and groceries, that was about it.

Wolves and a Bear

I was not planning to do any wildlife watching today. Today was supposed to be some internet stuff and fishing. It didn't quite work out that way.

On the way to Cooke City, I saw some people I knew. The way they were set up told me that there may be some wolf activity to be seen, so I stopped. The story was that up in the hills above the road, the Lamar Canyon pack pups had been seen. So, I got my scope out. Back up the road was another group of people with a different angle on the scene. They said, over the radio, that they were seeing a grizzly bear in the area the pups had been seen. More interesting. No sigh of the wolf pups, though. After about half an hour, they said the bear was heading down the hill in out direction. Really interesting, so I got the camera out. Soon enough, we saw the bear coming down. It crossed the road about 200 yards away and headed up the valley, ignoring the fishermen.

Then, we heard howling from both sides. The pups were to the west of us and the adults were across the valley to the east. After about 15 minutes, we started to see the pups. One here in the sage, another there on a hilltop. It became obvious that they were heading down hill, so we watched and waited. They crossed the road near where the bear did. (the pictures aren't very good because the heat waves made it impossible to focus)

Then, they crossed the creek

Shook themselves dry

And waited for the 4th one to arrive

Not a bad morning.

I did go fishing in the afternoon, but only caught 3.

Saturday, August 22, 2015

It's cool today and the smoke from the fires in the northwest is making it very hazy here today.

I got up early and got to the Lamar Valley by 6:30, just in time to see 5 wolves. It was 4 pups and the alpha female of the Lamar Canyon pack. We only saw them briefly, but they did howl for a bit, as well:

The picture isn't very good. I'm still working on using this new setup.

Later, Doug and Melba showed me a new place to see the wolves in the Hayden Valley. I'll go back there again later.

On the way back to camp for ,lunch, there was a bighorn ewe:

and her lamb:

A quiet day. I slept in, did some email, some chores around camp and lounged until aroound 3 when I went out to the Lamar Valley to see if any wolves were to be seen.

None were. The pack left this morning and hadn't returned when I left at 8:00pm.

Usual second day morning – drive up to campground and get set up. The only difference this time is I'm camped in Mammoth instead of Tower. It has to do with how many days you can stay in a campground before Labor day, so I'm doing some of them here.

After lunch, I drove around and mostly missed stuff. The biggest miss was a wolf battle in the Hayden Valley. Apparently, about an hour before I got there, the Mollies pack invaded the Wapiti Lake's pack territory and there was a big battle that was viewable from the road.

Later, I went to the Lamar Valley and saw one wolf from a distance for a bit. I was too busy keeping it in the scope and letting others look to take any pictures. I did get a photo of an osprey in a tree eating a trout:

Usual first day – drive across Wyoming to just east of Grand Teton Park,

The only thing of note is that it has been very hazy with smoke all across Wyoming. Can't even see the Tetons.
